$4,000 – Lakewood, WA:
“1980 Subaru GL Hatch for sale, with extensive modifications. For starters, this car was the subject of a 3 part series in the early ’80s in Motor Trend magazine. Their plan was to convert a bone stock Subaru GL Hatchback into an Audi Quattro competitor. I have all magazine articles to prove this, and in person I can prove this is the car from the magazine article due to the numerous small details scattered around the car. After Motor Trend was finished with the car, it was donated to Western WA Universities “Vehicle Research Institute” where it was used in a variety of testing. I purchased the car from the university a few years ago, and have been slowly working on it since.
For starters, this is a 1980 Subaru GL hatchback. It has the 3rd eye center grille foglight, dual range hi/low 4wd, four speed manual transmission, and a EA81 1.8 liter engine.
From the baseline specifications, the car gets interesting. See list below for custom modifications to the car from Motor Trend:
-It is turbocharged, the turbo setup was designed and fabricated by Kas Katner of Arkay Turbos. It has a prototype Arkay detonation control box, which is no longer hooked up. It was equipped with an SU carburetor, this has been removed and a manifold for a Holley has been installed (note, I have included photos of the engine with both SU and Holey carb setups). The original SU carb is included with sale, the Holley carb in the photos is not included with sale. The heads on the engine have been extensively modified for better flow, they feature Chevrolet roller rockers and valves. The valves are substantially larger than Subaru OEM valves. I have photos of the heads off the car to prove this.
-According to the article the car was equipped with heavy duty torsion bars, delivered to Motor Trend direct from Subaru. I’m assuming these are still on the car, though I have nothing to compare them to.
-The seats are stock GL seats with foams cut/reupholstered to mimic Audi Quattro seats. It still has the front seats from this, rear is missing. Motor Trend wanted it to look as “Audi Quattro” as possible.
-It has a front air dam, it started life as an Mitcom Flexdam but was heavily modified by a Mitcom employee (this is still with car). There was a rear spoiler, whic was a completely prototype Mitcom spoiler, built to sort of mimic a Porsche whale tail. Unfortunately this is no longer with car.
-It has a Britax sunroof. It is still present in car but needs work, appears that parts are available for these sunroofs. Apparently Motor Trend thought a sunroof would be cool. It would be if restored.
-It still has the custom “Quattro San” decals that Motor Trend had made for the car.
It is not running currently, the heavily modified cylinder heads are very touchy, and it needs a head gasket right now. Will need to be towed. Also, the interior is typical of a 1980 car that has been sitting, it needs work, and a majority of the interior behind the front seats is missing.
The body is extremely rust free, no major cancer anywhere. I have spent the past few years searching out non bent or rusted replacement fenders, doors, and hoods, which is why the car is a few different colors right now. It comes with other spare rust and dent free replacement sheet metal pieces, as well as a few tubs of extra parts.
I am also including copies of the original Motor Trend magazines this car appeared in, to help prove it’s history.
I’m asking $4000 for the car. Cash offers considered in person. I have a ton more information about the car and photos of various custom pieces on it. Please email me with any questions.
