“1990 Volkswagen VSE Jackrabbit, Stored over 20 years, I have brought this car back to life. Dozens of hours were spent on the diagnosis and repairs needed to get to this point.
Google VSE Jackrabbit for the history. Not a “Cut off the rabbit and drop on a new body” type of kit car. This is tubular custom frame, designed and built in Carmel, Ca. by Herb Adams of VSE fame.
Donor was a 1980 basic rabbit with 96k miles. 1.6l EJ engine with a GC 4 speed transaxle. I believe this was one of the first prototype/proof of concept cars made. The idea was you could get the kit and transfer everything from your donor car. Unfortunately they chose a basic rabbit donor for this car. For example you could swap motor and transaxle to one from a GTI. Then add bigger brakes and coilovers. At only 1500 lbs this car would be amazing. As it is now, it is fun, but not very fast.
1 of only 25 built, this is quite a rare vehicle. Complete and never crashed. Includeds original dash and trunk lid. Perfect for a VW MK1 enthusiast, father and son team or anyone who wants a fun and affordable roadster. Really needs someone to take over and finish project.
Legally titled, registered and insured in California. Jackrabbit is drivable and fun, but upgrading to a newer more powerful drive train is what this car truly needs. All MK1 VW fits and makes for easy and affordable upgrades if you find a PickNPull with a mid/late 80’s VW Golf, GTI, Cabriolet or Jetta inventory.
Please note this is very small. Less than 48″ at top of roll bar. 83″ wheelbase. Doors are fixed in place and you must climb in. If your inseam is 36″ and up, it will be very tight between pedals and streering wheel. Any shoe size above 12 will also find it tight in the footwell.
Doors fixed in place, no roof, no windows, no heat/defrost, no radio, no seat padding and no spare/jack installed. I have a Mickey mouse spare and jack, but have not mounted them in any way.

Needs fiberglass repair and paint. See photos. Needs dash fabricated. Needs horn, wiper system repair, fuel sender and new seat belts.
List of recent repairs;
Fuel system flushed. New fuel pump, pump to accumulator line, fuel accumulator, rebuilt warm-up regulator,fuel filter, air filter, fuel injectors, o-rings and O2 sensor.
New cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, timing belt and ignition module.
Cooling system flushed. New water pump, thermostat, hoses, aluminium radiator, dual electric cooling fans, temp sensor and relay.
Brake system flushed. New front rotors, pads and rear wheel cylinders.
Old 1980 wiring completely replaced. New headlights, running lights, tail lights and turn signals.
