NO TRADES AND I DON’T NEED HELP SELLING ITWhy are you selling it?
My life has changed and while I’m only cosmetic steps away from being done with building this I don’t find myself driving it any more and I’d prefer to not have all the money and time I’ve put into this car wasted. I didn’t set out to build it to let it sit, but with 2 other cars in the family this one is the least used. I’d like to pass this on to someone who will enjoy it.What’s the story?
I spent almost 10 years looking for an S6 Avant to build into a moderately powerful, reliable daily driver that would haul all my stuff but still be fun when you put the smile pedal down. When I purchased it in 2014 this car came with a 2.6L Eurospec Sport stroker motor, a custom small housing turbo, a half finished tune, frankensteined rear coilvers and a chewed up rear bumper. It was priced right and I figured having the stroker motor already in the car would be a fun way to build what I wanted and have something a bit unique at the same time. Most folks seem to tune these motors to RS2 specs and call it a day.The original tune the car came with was so bad that it burned all the exhaust valves. So I had the head rebuilt figuring it was left over damage from the previous owner thrashing on the car. I drove it like that for a while until the cog gear snapped and the pistons ate all the exhaust valves. When I had EFI express fix that I put a Borg Warner EFR6758 turbo onto it at the same time – figuring I had to re-tune the car anyway I may as well know what shape the turbo is in so why not put something new on and save some tuning money in the future? The car put down 330hp/330lb/ft at 3300RPM on 93 octane in that configuration. This turbo is great, it spools fast and pulls very hard when it hits peak boost. You get 5PSI almost immediately out of it when you put your foot down, this isn’t a motor that only makes power above 5k RPM. It’s useful power when you want it and gobs of it at that.
After a while I started having issues with the car intermittently not starting and then it just stopped running althogether. Turns out that stroker motor was built poorly and the engine ate all the piston rings down to the point that 3/5 cylinders ended up with compression so low the car would no longer turn over. I spent a lot of time chasing this issue only to eventually had EFI Express build me a 2.2l motor with forged internals, a new clutch and basically everything else that goes along with it (mod list below). I never had the new engine dyno’d but Marc and I are both certain it makes close to the same power. The car holds 25 PSI all the way to red line and absolutely screams when you floor it. Marc also left a launch mode in the car which I’ve used all of once but it’s a neat feature to have. At this same time I had 17z calipers and D2 chassis A8 rotors put on the car to reign in the power and a whole host of other reliability related things replaced.
4 years and close to $18k later I finally have a reliable car after rebuilding basically everything mechanical in it. If it moves, chances are I replaced it. The only things not touched were the transmission and driveshaft/axles. At this point the car is a turn key and drive vehicle. I’ve not had a single mechanical issue with it in the last year that I’ve had it. There’s more story than what’s written here but I never skimped on this car as my original goal was driveability and reliability.
All major mechanical work on this car was done at EFI Express in Lee, NH. I have all invoices for work they performed (totalling to almost $16k). Since I’ve owned it I’ve put ~5k miles on it.
Note: The car has the original O1E 5 speed transmission. I replaced the shift knob with one from a B5 S4 and never got around to deleting the 6th gear from the shift pattern.
What’s left to do?
My next plans were to put on the new fenders and have the car painted and then eventually work on refinishing the interior.The good:
* Turn key and drive reliability
* Mechanically it’s almost a new car
* No pixels out on the HVAC controlsThe not so good:
* Paint needs work, few surface rust spots on the doors and the fenders. I have new fenders that will come with the car
* Driver’s seat is a bit rough. The rest of the leather can use attention
* A/C doesn’t blow cold. The snowflake comes on in the controls but no cold air.
* Cruise control doesn’t work.
* Stereo has a ground loop somewhere, it’s buzzed since I bought it but I never really used the radio.
* Airbag light is on and needs to be resetMotor build:
* 2.2L AAN Shortblock
* Genuine RS2 Exhaust manifold
* DM Forged connecting rods (Iroz Motorsports)
* Stock Pistons
* All new main and rod bearings
* ARP head studs

* Tuned to 25PSI on 93 octane by EFI Express
* HPR motor mounts (60 durometer)
* 034 snub mount
* Hardened I5 cog gearOther mods:
* H&R springs with Bilsteing shocks
* Igor modded camber plates to allow stock alignment numbers
* Wahlbro 044 fuel pump
* Stromung 3” exhaust
* V-band added to fit EFR turbo by EFI Express
